No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
