Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
