The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a significant honors show draws close, one notices an outcry for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
